Vietnamese Seeds Fund presents scholarships to needy students in Mekong Delta region

NDO – Nhan Dan (People) newspaper organised a ceremony at Can Tho Univesity, Can Tho city, on August 18, to present 1,300 Vietnamese Seeds Fund scholarships to needy students in the Mekong Delta region.

The ceremony was attended by Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Truong Hoa Binh; Secretary of the Party Central Committee (PCC) and head of the PCC’s Communication and Education Commission, Vo Van Thuong; Secretary of the Party Central Committee (PCC) and President of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front (VFF), Tran Thanh Man; member of the Party Central Committee (PCC), Thuan Huu, Editor-in-Chief of the Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the PCC Communication and Education Commission, and Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association; Minister of Education and Training, Phung Xuan Nha; and Minister-Chairman of the National Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs, Do Van Chien.

The "Vietnamese Seeds Fund" was first set up in 2012 by Nhan Dan newspaper with the aim of promoting a learning society movement and providing training for younger generations across the country.

Addressing the event, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper and President of the Vietnamese Seeds Fund, Phan Huy Hien, said that according to the Ministry of Education and Training, the student dropout rate in the Mekong Delta remained high in 2017, mainly due to people’s living conditions being very difficult, as a result, the cost of learning is always a burden.

This year’s programme presented 1,300 scholarships, worth VND3 million each, with a total value of VND3.9 billion (US$167,700), to students in 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region, with each locality allocated 100 scholarships.

The total value of the scholarships is funded by the Lien Viet Post JSC Commercial Bank.

A performance at the ceremony

This year’s event is the first time that the fund will present scholarships to students on a large scale in the Southwest region, providing a solid foundation for further activities in the future.

Chairman of the Cam Tho municipal People's Committee Vo Thanh Thong said that the scholarships will be a source of encouragement for students of needy households to overcome their difficulties in order to pursue their studies and that the programme will be steadily maintained and developed.
