NDO - The Party and State expect intellectuals and scientists to take a pioneering role in national development, considering science and technology as a top policy, a senior Party official has said.

Vo Van Thuong, the Head of the Central Commission for Communication and Education, made the statement on May 14 in a meeting with 100 members of the intelligentsia and scientific community who have recorded many significant achievements.

He said that a range of policies have been introduced to develop a brigade of scientists and attract more contributions of intellectuals, especially Vietnamese abroad.

However, their role has yet to be fully tapped into and their contributions have yet to become an important driver for the country’s rapid development amid globalisation.

At the gathering, many scientists expressed their opinions and expectations to the Party, State and the Ministry of Science and Technology.

For his part, Deputy PM Vu Duc Dam thanked the intellectuals for their contributions to national development and shared the difficulties concerning the financial mechanisms in research.

He asserted that the government will take bolder actions so that science-technology may truly become the top policy, which can bring into play the strength of the entire political system and evoke creativity in all individuals in society.
