NDO - The election of deputies to the 14th National Assembly (NA) and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2016-2021 tenure held on May 22 was hailed as an overall success which ensured the democracy of the nation and equality in a legal and economical manner, becoming a true festival of the people.

The election was also of great significance as it took place after the successful conclusion of the 12th National Party Congress and whilst the entire people are making every effort to implement tasks defined in the Resolution of the congress.

The general election attracted the participation of a majority of the people with 99.35% turnout, affirming political awareness and high responsibility of Vietnamese citizens to select fit people to engage in administration at all levels. The election results also affirmed the success of the leadership and the direction of Party committees and authorities at all levels.

The process of national renewal initiated and led by the Party has overcome many difficulties and gained significant achievements to complete legal systems and improve living standards of the people, which are favourable factors for implementing the election.

The election also took place at a time when the country is facing many challenges due to complicated developments in the world in addition to acts of sabotage from hostile forces and the mass fish deaths in several central provinces which caused widespread concern among the people. However, under the sound leadership of Party committees, authorities, the Fatherland Front and other relevant agencies, the election concluded in success.

The elections of deputies to the 14th NA and People’s Councils at all levels were held on the same day, requiring extensive preparations. After the NA issued Resolution No.105/2015/QH13 announcing May 22 as the Election Day, authorised agencies at central and local levels quickly carried out preparation work particularly in regards to the establishment of the National Election Council.

All preparatory works have been carried out carefully and effectively including the organisation of consultative meetings, the listing of candidates and their biographies, meetings with voters, the settlement of complaints and denunciations related to the election and communication campaigns about the election, among others.

The National Election Council announced the list of 496 elected deputies to the 14th NA and about 320,000 elected deputies to the People's Councils at all levels who represent will and aspirations of the people to exercise State power in the NA and People's Councils at all levels. Thus, elected deputies should keep close and regular contact with the people to collect their opinions to send to the NA and People's Councils and be model citizens in abiding by the Constitution and law in addition to actively protecting the legitimate rights and interests of the people.

The success of the election is an important prerequisite to continue building, consolidating and completing the law-governed socialist state of the people, by the people and for the people in accordance with the 2013 Constitution.
