Numerous individuals and organisations gathered at the airport to wait for Vinh’s flight, among them were leaders of the sports sectors, representatives of the Defence Ministry and hundreds of cheering fans.

The 2016 Olympics turned out to be a successful Games for Vietnam as a whole and for the shooting department in particular, with shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh living up to expectations winning two medals, including one gold in the men’s 10m air pistol and one silver in the men’s 50m slow fire pistol event.

Vinh’s efforts have brought Vietnam’s Olympic tally to a total of four medals, following the previous two silver medals won by taekwondo artist Tran Hieu Ngan (Sydney Olympics 2000) and weightlifter Hoang Anh Tuan (Beijing Olympics 2008).

Welcoming Vinh at the airport, Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training Vuong Bich Thang hailed the 41-year-old shooter’s gold medal as of extreme significance as it was Vietnam’s first-ever gold won at an Olympic event.

Vinh’s success is not only the pride of himself but also of the national sports sector and millions of Vietnamese people, Thang added.

Coach of the national shooting team Nguyen Thi Nhung said she was very pleased with Vinh’s performance in Rio, which was a deserving reward for the team’s thorough pre-Olympic preparations.

For his part, Olympic star Hoang Xuan Vinh expressed his sincere thanks for the fine welcoming home and congratulations from the leaders of the sports sector as well as the warm sentiments of home fans. He also pledged to continue his efforts in the future to bring home more glories for the country.
