Rio Olympics: Vietnam finishes in 48th place

NDO/VNA - Vietnam has achieved its highest ranking at any Olympic Games at the Rio Olympics which closed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the morning of August 22 (Hanoi time).

With one gold and one silver, both won by shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh, the country finished 48th in the medal tally.

Besides Vietnam, only three other countries in Southeast Asia won gold medals at the Games, which are Thailand (two golds, two silvers and two bronzes), Indonesia (one gold and two silvers) and Singapore (one gold).

Malaysia brought home four silvers and one bronze and the Philippines secured only one silver medal.

The US topped the medal tally with 46 golds, 37 silvers and 38 bronzes. The host country, Brazil, stood at 13th place.

The Rio Olympic Games, the first games to be held in a South American country, saw the participation of 207 countries and territories.

Japan will host the next Olympic Games in 2020.
