NDO – Park Hang-seo’s side delivered a sweet start to the International U23 Football Tournament – VinaPhone Cup 2018, as favourite striker Nguyen Cong Phuong scored in the second half to earn Vietnam a 2-1 win over Palestine in their opener at Hanoi’s My Dinh National Stadium on August 3.

The victory was quite convincing for what the “yellow stars” performed during the 90 minutes of the match.

With home-field advantage, Vietnam put pressure on the Palestinian side right from the first whistle.

However, it was Palestine U23s who scored the opening goal of the game, with 19-year-old Oday Dabbagh blasting a powerful header from close range in the 29th minute.

In the remainder of the first half, Park Hang-seo’s players intensified their attacks, seeking to equalise the score. Their efforts paid off seconds before half time, as veteran forward Nguyen Anh Duc slotted home Cong Phuong’s convenient pass for a timely equaliser.

After providing an assist for Anh Duc, the Hoang Anh Gia Lai striker managed to score his personal goal seven minutes into the second half.

Assisted by Quang Hai’s through ball, Cong Phuong skewed an eye-catching volley-style shot from a narrow angle to beat the Palestinian keeper, thus sealing a well-deserved 2-1 triumph for Park Hang-seo’s side.

With the full three points against Palestine, Vietnam currently lead the provisional table, ahead of Omar and Uzbekistan, who played out a goalless draw in another match on the same day.

Next up for Vietnam U23s will be a clash with Omar U23s on August 5.
