My Trang – Thanh Thu continue to win women's doubles championships

NDO – The players competed in three doubles finals on May 25 at the ongoing 37th Nhan Dan Newspaper National Table Tennis Championships - PetroVietnam - Ca Mau Fertiliser Cup 2019 in Nha Trang city, Khanh Hoa province.

In the mixed doubles final, despite losing in the second and third sets, Duc Tuan and Ngoc Lan from Hai Duong won first, fourth and last sets to beat Dang Vu and My Trang from Ho Chi Minh City to secure the gold medal.

In the men’s doubles, defending champion Nguyen Anh Tu (Hanoi) and veteran Doan Kien Quoc (Khanh Hoa) exploited many weaknesses while playing against doubles partners Phan Huy Hoang and Ta Hong Khanh from Hanoi T&T team.

After more than 40 minutes of competition, Huy Hoang – Hong Khanh won 3-1 to secure the victory and change their medal’s colour.

After competing in the mixed doubles’s event, My Trang and her teammate Thanh Thu from Ho Chi Minh City continued through the tournament into the grand final in the women’s doubles category.

The duo earned a rapid 3-1 win over young players Pham Thi Thu Huong and Tran Mai Ngoc from Hanoi T&T to successfully defend their championship from last year in 2018.

Earlier in the afternoon, 15-year-old player Tran Mai Ngoc continued to mark a successful competition season as he easily beat Nguyen Bach Thanh Thu 4-1 in the semifinals to face My Trang in the finals in the women’s single category.

Tran Mai Ngoc is the second 15-year-old player winning the right to play in the final match during the past 37 years of the tourney. In 1988, Nhan Vi Quan was also claimed champion in the women’s single event when she was only 15 years old.

Yesterday morning, 18-year-old player Dinh Anh Hoang from Hanoi T&T made a big surprise in the quarter-finals as he eliminated 2018 runner-up Nguyen Duc Tuan (Hai Phong) who is also ranked the number 2 national player. However, in the semifinals, Anh Hoang lost to another ranked national player, Doan Ba Tuan Anh 2-4.

In another semifinal match, the number one ranked player Nguyen Anh Tu quickly beat Vu Quang Hien (Hai Duong) 4-1.

The matches receive enthusiastic cheers of the audiences in Nha Trang city.
