Vietnam’s chess star off to good start at Danzhou Super Grandmaster Tournament

NDO – Vietnam’s no. 1 chess player, Le Quang Liem, enjoyed a good start to his campaign at the ninth Danzhou Super Grandmaster Tournament in China’s Hainan province, holding Chinese Yu Yangyi to a draw in the first round of play on July 27.

This is a positive result for Liem (Elo 2728), as Yu Yangyi, former U20 world champion and China’s no. 2 player, holds an Elo rating of 2762, the highest of all the participants.

The two players agreed on a tie after 37 moves, which temporarily put the Vietnamese GM into fourth place after Round 1 with 0.5 points.

The tournament is taking place from July 27 to August 4, featuring competition from eight chess players, China’s GMs Yu Yangyi, Wei Yi and Bu Xiangzhi, Russia’s Vladimir Fedoseev, Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem, the US’s Samuel Shankland, Poland’s Jan-Krzysztof Duda and India’s Vidit Santosh Gujrathi.

The single round-robin event offers a total prize fund of US$60,000, with US$20,000 for the overall champion.
