Liem failed to take advantage of playing white in his attempt to beat Fedoseev for his first win in the competition, agreeing to share a point with the Russian competitor within 37 moves, which was the third tie for the Vietnamese GM after four matches.

Earlier, Liem drew with China’s Yu Yangyi and Poland’s Jan-Krzysztof Duda in the first two rounds of play before conceding a third-round defeat to China’s Bu Xiangzhi, who currently leads the standings with three points following two wins and two draws.

The three remaining matches of the tournament will take place on August 1, 2, and 3, respectively.

Last year, Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem achieved a runner-up finish overall with 5.5 points, just one point behind the Chinese champion, Wei Yi.

The ninth edition of the Danzhou Super Grandmaster Tournament is taking place from July 27 to August 4, featuring eight chess players, China’s GMs Yu Yangyi, Wei Yi and Bu Xiangzhi, Russia’s Vladimir Fedoseev, Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem, the US’s Samuel Shankland, Poland’s Jan-Krzysztof Duda and India’s Vidit Santosh Gujrathi.

The eight-player single round-robin features five international grandmasters, as well as several top Chinese players. The total prize fund is US$60,000, with US$20,000 for the overall winner.
