Liem took advantage of playing white to force the US opponent’s surrender after 40 moves.

It was Liem’s first win in this year’s competition, following four draws and one loss in the previous five rounds.

In the other Round 6 matches, China’s Yu Yangyi and Poland’s Jan-Krzysztof Duda finished off Russia’s Vladimir Fedoseev and Bu Xiangzhi of China, respectively, while another Chinese player, Wei Yi, played out a tie with India’s Vidit Santosh Gujrathi.

Quang Liem currently has three points, half a point behind Bu Xiangzhi and Jan-Krzysztof Duda, and one point off the leader, Yu Yangyi.

In today’s last round, Liem will play Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, who stands at the bottom of the table with 2.5 points. A victory will allow the Vietnamese GM to foster hopes of concluding his 2018 campaign among the overall leading group.

The ninth edition of the Danzhou Super Grandmaster Tournament is taking place in China’s Hainan province from July 27 to August 4. The eight-player single round-robin features five international grandmasters, as well as several top Chinese players. The total prize fund is US$60,000, with US$20,000 going to the overall winner.
