NDO – Forward Xuan Tao scored a brace to help Vietnam fight back to edge out Myanmar 2-1 in their opening clash at the 2019 International U19 Football Tournament in Nha Trang city, in the central province of Khanh Hoa, on March 23.

Despite their positive start, coach Guillaume Graechen’s side suddenly fell behind after 12 minutes as an unnecessary foul by a Vietnamese defender in the box cost them a penalty which was successfully converted into the opener for Myanmar.

After the unexpected goal, Vietnam maintained their patience and deployed constant attacks on their opponents.

The hosts needed just nine minutes to restore parity as Xuan Tao latched onto a subtle one-touch pass from a teammate before producing a clever shot to beat the Myanmar goalkeeper.

Inspired by the equaliser, the Vietnamese warriors fought with greater confidence and went ahead seven minutes later thanks to a second goal by Xuan Tao. The forward of SHB Da Nang FC’s youth team again showed his killer instinct, taking a long pass from the midfield, breaking past the Myanmar goalie and burying the ball in the top right corner of the net to seal a 2-1 victory for Graechen’s side.

Vietnam U19s (in red) dominate ball possession throughout the match.

Earlier on the same day, Thailand U19s also got off to a good start by finishing off China U19s with the same score of 2-1.

The annual competition has brought together four U19 teams, including China, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam, in a round-robin tournament, in which the top two teams will qualify for the title match, while the remaining two co-share the third prize. The overall champion will receive the trophy and US$10,000 in prize money.

In addition to the collective prizes, the organising committee will also grant individual prizes worth US$5,00 each to the “best player of the tournament”, the “best Vietnamese player”, the “top scorer”, the “best goalkeeper” and the “best referee”. The “man of the match” and the player who scores the first goal in each match will receive a bonus of US$100 at the end of each game.

All matches are taking place at 19/8 Stadium in Nha Trang city until March 30, with free entrance for supporters.
