Vietnam tennis team set out to compete in 2019 Davis Cup

NDO – The Vietnamese tennis team on June 23 left Ho Chi Minh City for Singapore to attend the 2019 Davis Cup – Asia/Oceania Group III, aiming to gain promotion to Group II in 2020.

After more than 10 days of intensive training in Da Nang and Tay Ninh, the five-member squad led by captain Truong Quang Vu are ready for their mission. The team features the best of Vietnamese tennis players, including captain Truong Quang Vu, Le Quoc Khanh, Pham Minh Tuan, Trinh Linh Giang (No. 1,778th ITF) and Vietnam’s No. 1 player Ly Hoang Nam (No. 405th ATP).

Among the eight countries participating in Davis Cup - Asia/Oceania Group III, Vietnam have the highest position (66th) according to the national rankings by the International Tennis Federation (ITF). For that reason, the Vietnam team are automatically ranked No. 1 seed, synonymous with numerous advantages in the draw process.

The remaining seven teams are Iran (72nd), Kuwait (73rd), Qatar (83rd), Sri Lanka (87th), Syria (92nd), Malaysia (96th) and hosts Singapore (100th).

Captain Truong Quang Vu commented: “The Vietnam team are ranked highest among the participating countries this time, but the other teams’ squads are also very uniform.” However, the 1977 born was still upbeat about Vietnam’s chances.

“If the team perform at 100% of our ability, we will finalise the highest goal. During the pre-tournament process, some players were injured but after two weeks of training, they have recovered completely and are in very good form,” Vu stated.

Key player Ly Hoang Nam also proved confident with his personal progress over recent times. Nam said: “In terms of strength, I have improved a lot in both forehand and backhand strokes, while my serves are also more stable and more powerful.”

The 2019 Davis Cup - Asia/Oceania Group III takes place from June 26 to 29 at the OCBC Multi-purpose Arena, No. 5 Stadium Drive, Singapore, in in a round table format. Accordingly, there will be an A and a B pool, with each pool consisting of four teams. The Vietnamese team, with the highest ranking, will top Pool A, while the Iranian team will top Pool B. The position of the remaining teams will be announced after the draw is held at 1 pm (local time) at the OCBC Arena on June 25.

Group stage matches will take place on Wednesday (June 26) until Friday (June 28). Play-off matches will be held on Saturday (June 29). In the end, there will be a maximum of three teams with highest results promoted to Group II and two losing teams relegated to Group IV in 2020.
