Despite playing away in the first leg a few days ago, Hanoi FC managed to clinch a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a first-half penalty rebound from striker Nguyen Van Quyet. The result has given the capital team a big advantage as they host Binh Duong at Hang Day Stadium later today (Aug 7).

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday (Aug 6), Nghiem did not hide his ambition of overcoming the opponents to advance further in the continental playground.

“The match is significant to me and my players, but I don’t want to put them under pressure. I want them to play with dedication. Thus, football depends on many factors, and it is impossible to foretell anything. We would like to beat Binh Duong to progress further. If we enter the inter-zone semifinals, Hanoi FC will play with the best of our abilities to go as far as possible.”

With Hanoi FC having to play on many different fronts, the 47-year-old tactician said that he was forced to make lineup rotation.

“Hanoi FC have four foreign players. In recent matches, we have mainly used Pape Omar. I have to calculate how to prevent the density of clashes from eroding the players’ fitness. All the other teams mostly depend on foreigners, while Hanoi FC depend on play-style.”

“Hanoi FC have shaped their own play-style over recent years, even with the lack of one or two positions. We always play dedicatedly and fairly in any tournaments and matches,” Nghiem stated.

Meanwhile, the first-leg defeat means that Becamex Binh Duong will have to beat Hanoi FC tonight with at least two goals in order to qualify for the inter-zone semifinals.

Addressing the press conference, Binh Duong manager Nguyen Thanh Son affirmed their strong determination to turn the tables against Hanoi FC.

“None of our players is injured, so we will play with the highest level of enthusiasm and dedication. Actually, I also rotated my players in the V.League clash against Hanoi FC last weekend. Binh Duong will have the strongest squad for tonight’s decisive game and will perform better. We want to advance further and will strive to overcome Hanoi FC.”

The second leg of the AFC Cup ASEAN zonal final between Hanoi FC and Becamex Binh Duong will take place at Hang Day Stadium (Hanoi) at 7pm today, with the home side only needing a draw to see them through to the Inter-zone play-off semifinals.
