NDO – Reigning V.League champions Hanoi FC downed rivals Becamex Binh Duong 2-0 on aggregate in the AFC Cup ASEAN zonal final, after a 1-0 second-leg home win on August 7, to set up a meeting with Turkmenistan’s Altyn Asyr in the Inter-zone play-off semifinals.

Hanoi FC, unbeaten in their last six AFC Cup games (five wins and one draw), won the first leg 1-0 at Go Dau Stadium thanks to striker Nguyen Van Quyet’s penalty rebound.

In the return leg on Wednesday, Pape Omar slotted in from very close range one minute after the hour mark to gift Chu Dinh Nghiem’s side another 1-0 triumph and help them advance further in the 2019 AFC Cup as the winners of the ASEAN Zone.

Hanoi FC had the better of the first half but they were unable to turn their possession into goals, with Pape Omar Faye shooting high and wide to the left in front of an empty net (16’) and Do Hung Dung firing a powerful long-range strike wide (25’).

Binh Duong also missed a good chance, as Veniamin blasted a header off the post from To Van Vu’s right-wing cross.

The guests came close to breaking the deadlock 14 minutes after half-time, with Pedro bursting down the left flank and lofted a shot over Hanoi keeper Van Cong, which was unexpectedly blocked by Thanh Chung.

In the 61st minute, Binh Duong goalie Tan Truong failed to catch the ball from Quang Hai’s cornerkick. Pape Omar punished his serious mistake by slotting in from close range to open the scoring for Hanoi FC.

Inspired by the opener, the hosts played more confidently and almost doubled their advantage seven minutes later, as Quang Hai forced Tan Truong to make a brilliant save with a powerful shot from the centre of the box.

With time running out, Becamex Binh Duong strengthened their attacks seeking to equalise the score, but Hanoi keeper Van Cong did a good job to defend their advantage, as he brilliantly blocked a left-footed shot by Van Vu (83’) and a header by Nguyen Tien Linh (88’).

Winning the final 2-0 on aggregate, Hanoi FC have become the only representative of ASEAN Zone to continue their journey in this year’s AFC Cup campaign. Chu Dinh Nghiem’s troops will play the first leg of the Inter-zone play-off semifinals against Turkmenistan’s Altyn Asyr on August 20 and the second leg a week later.
