Real Madrid got off to a flying start in La Liga by beating Celta Vigo 3-1 away from home on Saturday with the help of a magnificent long-range strike from Toni Kroos, although they had Ballon d'Or winner Luka Modric sent off for a straight red card.

* Neymar has been left out of the Paris St Germain team for the second week running, coach Thomas Tuchel said on Saturday, as speculation continues over whether or not the Brazilian will remain at the French champions. “He won’t be with us,” Tuchel told reporters ahead of Sunday’s league match away at Rennes, adding that the forward was still not fully fit having missed last week’s season opening win over Nimes.

* Andy Murray will meet 72nd-ranked American Tennys Sandgren in the first round at the Winston-Salem Open as the British former world number one gives his surgically-repaired hip another test. The first round of the ATP 250 event in North Carolina will be played on Sunday and Monday. The day of Murray's match had yet to be announced.

* American Justin Thomas carded a spectacular course-record 11-under-par 61 to vault to a six-stroke lead in the third round at the BMW Championship in suburban Chicago on Saturday. An eagle with an eight-iron from 180 yards at the par-four 16th was just one highlight of an eventful day for Thomas, who broke by two strokes the previous best score at Medinah, set just 24 hours previously by Hideki Matsuyama.

* Real Mallorca made a dream return to La Liga with a 2-1 victory over Eibar at the Estadi Son Moix on Saturday less than two months after sealing back-to-back promotions back to the elite.

* Title contenders Borussia Dortmund crushed Augsburg 5-1 in their Bundesliga opener on Saturday, with two goals from Paco Alcacer, to lay down an emphatic marker after champions Bayern Munich slipped up in their season premiere a day earlier.

* Monaco suffered their second consecutive defeat into new campaign of Ligue 1 after losing 3-0 at Metz, while Argentine striker Dario Benedetto missed a penalty in Marseille's goalless draw with Nantes in the second round on Saturday.

* Bosnia and Herzegovina international striker Edin Dzeko has inked a new contract with Roma, the club announced on Saturday. The 33-year-old signed a new three-year deal with the club, ending a speculation that he would possibly move to Inter Milan.

* FC Barcelona striker Luis Suarez is likely to be out of action for a while after suffering a calf injury in his side's 1-0 defeat to Athletic Club Bilbao on the first day of the new Liga Santander season. Barcelona published a communique on their official website on Saturday confirming that the striker has suffered an injury to the soleus muscle in his right leg and saying "his availability will determine when he is available again."

* Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho will be loanded from Barcelona to Bayern Munich for the new season, the German club announced on Friday.
