Barcelona are still without all-time top scorer Lionel Messi as the Argentine was left out of the squad for their first home game of the La Liga season on Sunday against Real Betis due to a calf injury.

* Honda's MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez smashed the lap record to clinch pole position in qualifying for the British Grand Prix on Saturday. Championship leader Marquez posted his best lap of one minute 58.168 seconds at Silverstone and finished 0.428 faster than Italian great Valentino Rossi, who took second spot on a Yamaha.

* Carlos Ramos will not officiate any US Open matches involving Serena or Venus Williams in the wake of last year's "bittersweet" women's final controversy involving Serena and Naomi Osaka.

* Former finalist Kevin Anderson has withdrawn from the US Open due to a knee injury, tournament organizers said on Saturday. The South African, who reached the 2017 final in New York where he lost to Rafa Nadal, has not competed since he lost in the third round at Wimbledon last month.

* Colombian rider Miguel Angel Lopez was wearing the red jersey at the end of the opening stage of the Vuelta a Espana after his Astana team won Saturday's team time trial by a margin of two seconds over Deceuninck-QuickStep.
