Real Madrid were crowned winners of the first edition of the revamped Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, beating city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in a penalty shootout following a goalless draw after extra time in a tense final.

Zinedine Zidane’s side survived the final stretch of the game to force penalties and captain Sergio Ramos calmly sent Atletico keeper Jan Oblak the wrong way to convert the decisive fourth spot kick for Real to seal the first trophy of the season.

* Watford escaped the Premier League relegation zone for the first time this season with a 3-0 win at Bournemouth on Sunday but manager Nigel Pearson, who has engineered a remarkable transformation since taking over, said the job is not done. In the six games since Pearson arrived, when Watford were adrift at the bottom, he has taken 13 points, five more than predecessors Javi Gracia and Quique Sanchez Flores, both sacked this season, managed between them.

* Sergio Aguero became the most prolific foreign goalscorer in Premier League history with a record-breaking hat-trick as Manchester City thrashed Aston Villa 6-1 to reclaim second place on Sunday. The Argentine striker struck the third, fifth and sixth goals as City ran riot at Villa Park, taking his league tally to 177, two more than Frenchman Thierry Henry managed for Arsenal and joint-fourth on the all-time list alongside Frank Lampard.

* Paris St Germain's defensive shortcomings were exposed as Monaco snapped the champions' Ligue 1 winning streak in a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Parc des Princes on Sunday. The result left PSG on 46 points from 19 games, five ahead of second-placed Olympique de Marseille, who have played a game more. Monaco are eighth on 29 points having also played 19 games.

* Cristiano Ronaldo continued his superb scoring form as Juventus won 2-1 away to AS Roma on Sunday and moved two points clear at the top of Serie A. It was Ronaldo’s 14th league goal of the season and his ninth in the last six Serie A appearances. The result leaves Juventus on 48 points at the top of the table at the midway stage of the season, two ahead of Inter Milan, while Roma are fifth on 35 points.

* Women's marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei will return to defend her title at this year's London Marathon, organisers said on Monday. Kenya's Kosgei retained her Chicago Marathon crown last October in two hours, 14 minutes and four seconds to break Briton Paula Radcliffe's 16-year-old world mark.

* The ATP will donate US$500,000 to the WWF Australian Wildlife and Nature Recovery Fund as part of the bushfire relief efforts, the governing body of men's tennis said on Sunday. The donation from players was announced by Novak Djokovic and Rafa Nadal after Serbia defeated Spain to capture the inaugural ATP Cup team event in Sydney.

* Sampdoria came from behind to record their biggest win of the season and move five points clear of the relegation zone with a resounding 5-1 victory over Brescia in Serie A on Sunday. Sampdoria are in 16th place with 19 points, while a disappointing display from Brescia leaves them second-bottom on 14 points.

* Novak Djokovic recorded a straight-sets victory over long-time rival Rafael Nadal on Sunday to keep Serbia's hopes alive in the final of the inaugural ATP Cup team event in Sydney. Djokovic won 6-2, 7-6(4), extending his dominance over the Spaniard on hardcourts, a surface Nadal has not beaten him on since 2013. The tie will now be decided by a high-stakes doubles match, where the world's two highest-ranked players will face off to determine the winner of the US$15 million event.

* China lost to the defending champion Uzbekistan 2-0 in the second round of Group C at the 2020 AFC U23 championship on Sunday. After suffering two consecutive defeats, China now has no chance of reaching the last eight in the tournament.
