NDO – Vietnam coach Mai Duc Chung said that he would consider recalling centre back Chuong Thi Kieu, who is currently recovering from an injury, back to the national team in preparation for the upcoming AFC women’s Olympic qualifying play-offs.

The Vietnamese squad returned home from Jeju Island (Republic of Korea) on Monday (February 10) after successfully realising their mission of securing a place in the Tokyo 2020 qualifying play-off round.

Chung’s side advanced as the Group A runners-up in round three of the Olympic qualifiers following their 1-0 win over Myanmar and 0-3 defeat against the RoK, and will now face the Group B winners in the two-leg play-offs for a ticket to Tokyo this summer.

Evaluating Vietnam’s campaign in Jeju, the 61-year-old coach emphasised that the players demonstrated a resilient fighting spirit despite their inferior stature and fitness compared to their opponents.

Most importantly, with a rejuvenated squad, the young Vietnamese players had the chance to compete and integrate in the international competition environment, he stated.

Chung’s troops will take five days off to relax before resuming training on February 16 in preparation for their two play-off matches on March 6 (away) and March 11 (at home).

Together with the possible return of centre back Chuong Thi Kieu, Chung is planning to call up one or two U19 players to fill in as a defender or midfielder in the national squad.

The coach said he would propose to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) to arrange a number of friendly games with strong teams to give the Vietnamese women more opportunities to gain further experience ahead of their play-off campaign.
