NDO – Leaders Saigon FC conceded their first defeat in V.League 2020 after being beaten 0-1 away by Viettel FC on September 26 as play resumed after a two-month suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a stalemate having persisted for the majority of the match, manager Truong Viet Hoang sent Vu Minh Tuan onto the field to replace Ho Khac Ngoc late in the second half. The substitution brought success to the home side as Minh Tuan took a through ball from Que Ngoc Hai and shot past keeper Pham Van Phong three minutes into injury time to score the solitary goal.

Viettel FC became the first team to defeat “phenomenon” Saigon FC in V.League 2020. With this feat, the capital’s representatives have narrowed their gap with leaders Saigon to one point.

Saigon FC suffered a disadvantage as Pedro Paulo left the stadium in the first half due to torn muscle. The most concrete chance created by Vu Tien Thanh’s side was centre back Ahn Byung-keon’s close-range header (6’) which was unexpectedly parried by keeper Nguyen Manh.

Viettel FC also created a notable opportunity before halftime with Bruno firing a header at the post in the 35th minute.

In the second half, both sides made some substitutions which, however, did not work throughout the official 45 minutes.

It was not until three minutes into stoppage time that substitute Vu Minh Tuan placed the ball in the back of the net to secure Viettel a precious win.

The nail-biting victory helps Truong Viet Hoang’s side put an end to the guests’ unbeaten streak since the beginning of the V.League 2020 season and places them just one point behind Saigon FC.

Ho Chi Minh City climbed to third place in the table following their resounding 5-1 triumph over Nam Dinh FC, in which star striker Nguyen Cong Phuong contributed a brace.

Quang Ninh Coal and Quang Nam FC played out 2-2 home draws against Becamex Binh Duong and reigning champions Hanoi FC, respectively. SHB Da Nang edged out Hai Phong FC 1-0 at home, while newbies Hong Linh Ha Tinh won three points away following a 2-1 victory over Thanh Hoa FC.
