ASEAN meeting on society-culture opens in Da Lat

NDO - A meeting of the Senior Officials’ Committee for the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (SOCA) opened in in Da Lat city, Vietnam’s Lam Dong province on February 24.

The two-day meeting gathered nearly 60 delegates including senior officials in charge of socio-cultural affairs from 10 ASEAN member countries, ASEAN Secretariat, representatives from Vietnam’s functional ministries and sectors, and international experts.

In his opening speech, Deputy Secretary General, Kung Phoak, eulogised that since its establishment, ASEAN has shown significant progresses in regional integration, economic growth and social progress. He also spoke highly of fruitful efforts in building the ASEAN community.

For her part, Ha Thi Minh Duc, Deputy Director General of the International Cooperation Department under Vietnam’s Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, noted that, the year 2020 is an important year for Vietnam as it marks the 25th anniversary of Vietnam's accession to ASEAN and further affirms the role of Vietnam in the region and to the United Nations Security Council.

Duc, who is also head of the SOCA Vietnam delegation, stressed that ASEAN and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) in particular will continue to focus on improving people’s lives and building a bright future with all their partners.

Participants at the meeting assessed the mid-term implementation of the ASCC Blueprint, thus conducting national- and regional-level reviews in 2020 in order to step up the implementation of the blueprint for the 2021-2025 period.

The outcome of the meeting will be submitted to the 28th SOCA and the 23rd ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council Meeting, which are scheduled for April 5 to 8 in Vietnam’s coastal city of Da Nang.
