The Greek Coast Guard rescued 36 migrants from a beach on Chios island on March 28, with two still missing, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

The migrants reached the Greek island on board a dinghy from Turkey. An operation was still underway to locate the missing.

The nationalities of the survivors and the missing have not been identified.

More than one million people have landed on Greek shores since 2015, mainly via the Aegean Sea from Turkey's coasts, seeking refuge in Europe from warzones and extreme poverty.

Hundreds have perished in the waters, and despite the closure of the Balkan route to central Europe three years ago, thousands continue to risk their lives to cross into Europe.
