The summit issued a ten-commitment joint declaration, whereby the EU member states committed to strengthening solidarity and cooperation to work together to overcome all challenges and become a stronger force after years of internal divisions.
The commitments that the EU leaders declared target to protect democracy and the rule of law, stronger defence and improved employment for EU citizens. The EU leaders are committed to show unity and pledge to play a more assertive role globally to make the most of new trade opportunities and to coordinate in solving global issues.
* High-ranking EU officials said that the Brexit issue did not dominate the conference. Currently the UK is still a member of the EU, however, British Prime Minister Theresa May did not attend the Romanian summit but stayed in London to promote efforts to reach an agreement to leave the "common house" signed with the EU in late 2018.
* On the same day, European Council President Donald Tusk announced to convene a special EU summit on May 28 to accelerate the process of selecting candidates for appointment to the head positions at European Council and European Commission in the coming term, after European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker end their terms later this year.
