NDO – The Vietnamese Embassy in Egypt held a ceremony in Cairo on August 29 to celebrate the 52nd founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) (August 8, 1967-2019).

The event was attended by ambassadors and diplomatic officials of ASEAN member nations in Cairo, together with officials of the host country.

In his remarks, Vietnamese Ambassador Tran Thanh Cong reviewed the outstanding achievements ASEAN has obtained throughout the last over half century, stating that Vietnam has made remarkable contributions to the bloc’s success, reflected through most of ASEAN cooperation activities.

Particularly, Vietnam has contributed significantly to the prompt implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, while proactively proposing many new initiatives and promoting its role in ASEAN, receiving applause and support from other countries, he said.

Cong stated that in the context of many factors impacting ASEAN’s solidarity, prestige and position in the region, Vietnam has strived to consolidate the bloc’s solidarity, unity and the role in regional issues, including handling traditional and non-traditional security challenges, as well as resolving any problems arising in relations with partners.

At the same time, Vietnam has promoted practical cooperation in the important regional mechanisms and forums initiated by ASEAN in order to create consensus within the bloc and between ASEAN and partners on the role of ASEAN and the common interests of all countries, aiming to maintain peace, stability, security, and maritime and aviation safety in the East Sea, the diplomat said.

Vietnam has also promoted the integration of the East Sea issue into documents of ASEAN conferences and forums with positive content, while stressing the need to fully and effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and soon finalise a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC), he added.

According to the ambassador, as Vietnam assumes the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2020, the country is willing to make all-around contributions, affirming itself as a prestigious, proactive, dynamic and responsible member under a common roof.

In order to realise the ASEAN Vision 2025, Vietnam will continue to further promote its role and accelerate the areas of substantive cooperation to bring specific benefits to the people of each member country, Cong affirmed.
